People who don’t spend adequate time out of doors in bright light tend to experience a greater tendency toward overeating (especially sweets and starches) and weight gain, as well as decreased energy levels. Here are some tips to help you “lighten up”:
- Take a 20-30 minute walk outdoors every day.
- Enjoy lunch or coffee at an outdoor cafe, or take a picnic to the park.
- When indoors, let as much light inside by opening all window coverings. If possible, choose an environment that has lots of windows, glass doors, and skylights in the room.
- Sit near a window whenever possible. Rearrange your furniture and desk to face open windows.
- During “breaks” from work, school, or housework, take 5-10 minutes to go outdoors.
- Choose sunglasses that block the ultraviolet rays but have the lightest tint.
- Paint walls a light, bright color to reflect as much light as possible.
- Increase indoor light by using the brightest lightbulbs that lamps will safely allow.
- Whenever possible, walk instead of driving or riding in the car.
- Get up and out earlier in the morning to enjoy longer daylight hours.
