The Lindora program recommends using whole grain bread. Is this the same as a “multi-grain” product?

A multi-grain product is not the same as one that is labeled 100% whole grain.

Lindora recommends using bread products that are labeled “100% whole grain” and that include a 100% whole grain as the first ingredient on the Nutrition Facts label. These products are made with flour that contains the entire grain kernel, including the germ, bran and endosperm and contains lots of healthy fiber. (Not only does fiber help prevent heart disease, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and help prevent constipation, it aids in weight loss because it promotes a feeling of fullness.)

Multi-grain breads, on the other hand, usually contain a mixture of flours, including wheat flour, and caramel coloring. They provide less nutritional value (such as less zinc and vitamins) and less fiber.

You’ll receive the most nutritional value by choosing a 100% whole grain product instead of a mulit-grain or seven-grain product.
