Beyond Your Self

All of the world’s great spiritual programs share a common goal: to help the individual move beyond the narrow confines of the self. It is true, of course, that there are times when focusing on one’s own thoughts and desires is healthy, necessary, and appropriate. Self-assessment and self-awareness are essential, for example, when you’re undertaking a program of self-change such as weight loss or weight maintenance. People who live deeply connected and healthy lives, however, always say that caring for people, ideas, and things beyond themselves is both natural and necessary.

As a step in this direction, try doing something simple to care for your own neighborhood. As you take your walk today, carry a sack with you and pick up any litter you find along the way. It’s a simple gesture, but one that will make a difference. It’ll also make you feel good. So make your world a cleaner, better place today as you pass through it.
